pond skaters and kingfishers – 24th to 29th July 2019

Having got all supplies (and crew-mates!), on board we set off from Caen Hill Marina about a week ago, and - many, many locks later - we are now on the River Kennet at Wootton Rivers (a pretty little place full of thatched cottages). A train just whooshed past close to the right, drowning out the sound of Ryan's guitar and the buzz of an overly inquisitive wasp.

simple pleasures in achingly expensive Taormina and stunning Savoca, Sicily

The sun is beating down on me. Ryan is snorkeling (3rd mask lucky). I’m feeling pretty happy on my lumi-lilo, compared to all the other less smug humans scattered on this proverbially uncomfortable stoney beach opposite Isola Bella. Every so often a a gentle breeze strokes over me, bringing with it a wash of triumphantly Italian horn music.

Cambridge: remembering to notice what’s right under your nose

Saturday was a great impromptu day out. Food and coffee at the Fort St George, then a saunter along the river, followed by surreptitiously walking into the Colleges as if we belong there, talking about dissertations, as if they’re still to do.

Best though, was going up to the top of St Mary’s church, just behind the Market Place. Read more
